The Ideal Temperatures for a PacMan Frog

Ideal Temperatures for a PacMan Frog

Ideal temperatures for a PacMan frog are very crucial for their overall health and well-being. Find out the optimal temperature ranges for PacMan frogs at different stages of life.

In our article, What Is a PacMan Frog?, we mentioned that PacMan frogs originate from the tropical jungle areas of South America. This means the PacMan frog is native to a place that has warm temperatures and high levels of humidity.

Understanding this is very important because successfully keeping PacMan frogs in captivity means we must replicate their native conditions as much as possible.

Replicating their natural environment as much as possible is crucial for good health and a long life span. Maintaining ideal temperatures for a PacMan frog promotes a healthy appetite, normal activity, and a strong immune system.

Let’s learn what those ideal temperatures are during each stage of a PacMan frog’s life.

The Ideal Temperatures for a Baby PacMan Frog

The ideal temperatures vary for PacMan frogs depending on their age. Younger horned frogs generally require a little more heat than adults to help support their rapid growth.

Most of the time PacMan frogs are acquired as pets when they are babies, usually about one inch in diameter.

Baby PacMan frogs (1 – 3 inches in diameter) require temperatures ranging from 77°F to 82°F (25°C to 27.7°C) during the daytime and 70°F to 75°F (21.1°C to 23.8°C) at night.

Period of DayIdeal Temperature Range
Daytime77°F - 82°F (25°C to 27.7°C)
Nighttime70°F - 75°F (21.1°C to 23.8°C)

The Ideal Temperatures for an Adult PacMan Frog

Adult PacMan frogs can thrive with a bit lower temperatures than babies since heat requirements lessen as their metabolism and nutrition requirements change.

Adult PacMan frogs (over 3 inches in diameter) require temperatures ranging from 75° to 80°F (23.8°C to 26.6°C) during the daytime and 65° to 70°F (18.3°C to 21.1°C) at night.

Period of DayIdeal Temperature Range
Daytime75°F - 80°F (23.8°C to 26.6°C)
Nighttime65°F - 70°F (18.3°C to 21.1°C)
It is important to never allow a PacMan frog terrarium to reach temperatures below 65°F!

Ideal Temperatures = Ideal Health

Maintaining ideal temperatures for a PacMan frog is very important for their overall health. One of the biggest causes of death with captive-raised PacMan frogs is temperatures that are too low resulting in loss of appetite, stunted growth, and weakened immune system.

It is never a good idea to guess terrarium temperatures. Always use a high quality thermometer to continually monitor and adjust temperatures within your PacMan frog terrarium.

To assist with keeping optimum temperatures, connect heating devices to a thermostat. A thermostat will control the heating device so temperatures do not become too low or too high within the terrarium.
